“My education is the fruit of two different cultures that I have spent my whole life trying to reconcile, like mother and daughter, artist and designer. This is demonstrated by my journey that, beginning with traditional decorative techniques, has gradually drifted towards an increasingly more profound research into materials, experimenting with the audacious and risky matching of supposedly incompatible components, much like my parents. Sometimes, via mysterious alchemic reactions, the materials give life to surprising results of aesthetic and conceptual harmony. Opposing visions, but indispensable to each other, like the results of my experiments on materials.”

The fact that she is also an artist allows Barbara Abaterusso to come up with daring ideas that anyone else might balk at. The artist thinks of a rigid and cold material like metal and in its place imagines something soft and warm, like wool. The female in this case performs a dance, her warmth enveloping the metal that welcomes this gesture of love by allowing the engraving to do its work.

The fusion of bronze is an antique technique and is in itself a metamorphosis, a transformation. At extremely high temperatures the different properties of three metals are fused, creating a finer, much stronger bond. In its liquid state, the metal is poured into very fine moulds inside of which the original matrix dissolves leaving its impression behind. The metal hardens as it cools.

A subtle and delicate feminine soul, symbolized by antique lace, is covered by masculine symbols of gold and silver in an eternal embrace. This invention gives the wood the quality of cloth, and cloth the quality of wood. The two elements broaden their possibilities and ways of being perceived.

With this technique, lace and embroidery, metaphors of a typically female expression, are gently caressed by metal, the symbol of male strength. The latter, through the delicate touch of metal melted at 1500 degrees, adds strength to the former. From this particular overlap comes an extremely refined and innovative product that Barbara Abaterusso designed in collaboration with the Italian company Pendenza.

Deteriorating iron creates rust that, in turn, performs an aggressive action that corrodes it. Two contrasting elements capable of producing excellent results. The metal is protected by film where it must not be allowed to corrode, the procedure quite complex, while the decorative design is left without protection and thus free to rust.
ENGRAVING ... the will
ENGRAVING ... the will
To leave a mark within the field, a trace of the self within existence. An ancestral human need that always researches confirmations and references. A thick substance coats the metal and makes it impenetrable, while the marks traced by the artist remain uncovered so that the acids can corrode and dig within them. Continuous submersions of short duration engrave the traced marks deeper within the matter until achieving the desired result.
